Short answer: NYC junk removal services take almost anything non-hazardous - furniture, appliances, electronics, construction debris, yard waste, mattresses. They typically can’t take biohazard waste, active chemicals, asbestos, firearms, or propane tanks. Here’s the complete guide to what’s fair game and what isn’t.
Every week we get the same call: "Do you take [specific item]?" After over 10,000 jobs across NYC, we’ve compiled the most comprehensive list of what we haul away and what requires specialized handling. This guide covers everything.

⚠️ Items with restrictions
- Mattresses: Must be bagged per NYC Admin Code § 16-142.1 (we bag for you)
- Tires: We take but surcharge ($3-8 each) due to recycling fees
- Propane tanks: Only empty tanks - full or partial require exchange program
- Bed-bug-infested items: We take with double-bagging and proper handling (surcharge possible)
How We Decide What to Donate vs. Dispose
Our crews assess every item at pickup:
- Working and clean → Donation route (Housing Works, Goodwill, ReStore)
- Broken but materials recoverable → Recycling route (scrap metal, e-waste facility)
- Non-recoverable → Licensed transfer station (landfill)
Over 60% of what we pick up gets donated or recycled. Read what happens to your junk after pickup for the full journey.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do you take just one item?
Yes, single-item pickups start at $125. Smaller items like chairs can be combined with other pickups for free.
Q: Can you take items from outside the apartment?
Yes - basement storage units, lobby, curbside, backyard. We go where the items are.
Q: What if I’m not sure if something is hazmat?
Call or text a photo. We err on the side of caution - if there’s doubt, we recommend HHW drop-off.
Q: Do you take items from storage units (Public Storage, Manhattan Mini, CubeSmart)?
Yes, this is a routine service. Bring the access code and we handle everything.
Q: Are there items you’ll refuse even if technically legal?
Anything leaking, actively on fire, or with active infestation (bedbugs we handle - other infestations require pest control first).
